Motor Truck General Liability Insurance
A growing number of risk managers require for-hire truckers to have Motor Truck General Liability insurance. You can meet that requirement with Progressive’s Truck GL coverage. It pays for injuries or property damage you cause as a result of business activities not directly related to operating your truck.
Who needs Motor Truck General Liability insurance?
If you’re a for-hire trucker or motor carrier, you’ll most likely need Trucker’s GL.
Motor Truck General Liability insurance may provide coverage for the folllwing situations:
- Customers slipping and falling on your premises
- Erroneous delivery of products resulting in damage
- The actions of a driver while representing the insured and on the premises of others, such as loading docks and truck stops
- Libel and slander exposures
- Fire on rental property due to the insured’s error
You’ll also want to consider purchasing Motor Truck Cargo insurance, which protects the load that you’re hauling in case of fire, theft or collision.
Limits, deductibles and other details
Motor Truck General Liability insurance provides the following coverages:
- Bodily Injury and Property Damage Liability
- Personal Injury and Advertising Injury Liability
- Medical Payments
- Products-completed operations
- Damage to premises rented to you (available for 7 days or less)
Personal or advertising injury covers injury to a person or entity that is not physical in nature and is the result of negligence on your part. An example would be if you use another company’s logo in your advertising.
Medical Payments insurance cover physical injuries to people that are typically not on your premises but may become injured while on your property. If a customer is on your premises and slips and falls in the parking lot, Motor Truck General Liability insurance may provide coverage.
Products-completed operations provides coverage for bodily injury or property damage that happened due to delivering someone else's goods.
Exceptions and restrictions
To purchase Motor Truck General Liability insurance, you’ll also need to get Primary Liability coverage, which protects you if you cause an accident. Motor Truck General Liability insurance is only available on for-hire trucking risks when you’re exclusively hauling property or goods that you don’t own for a fee. If you operate a business in addition to for-hire trucking, you are ineligible for Trucker's General Liability. Motor Truck General Liability insurance is not available for fleet policies, and drivers are limited to a 500-mile radius.
Trucker’s GL is not available on the following vehicle types:
- Garbage trucks
- Cement trucks
- Limos
- Hearses
- Buses
- Passenger vans
- Ice cream trucks
