Non-Trucking Liability Insurance
What is non-trucking liability insurance?
Non-trucking liability (NTL) insurance is designed for owner operators who are under permanent lease with a motor carrier. It provides liability protection when your truck is used for non-business purposes, like going to the movies or running to the grocery store. NTL insurance can pay for injuries to other people or damage to their property.

What does non-trucking liability cover?
Progressive Commercial's non-trucking liability insurance helps protect your truck when it's used for non-commercial activities. It helps pay for costs associated with bodily injury or property damage to third parties. It can also cover related legal costs.
What is not covered by non-trucking liability?
While NTL insurance helps fill the gap in coverage when your commercial truck is being used for personal reasons, it's not all inclusive. NTL doesn't provide coverage when your truck is being used for business purposes, like hauling materials. It also doesn’t cover any cargo you're transporting or damage to the truck itself. These would typically be covered by primary liability insurance.
Additionally, a non-trucking liability policy won't provide uninsured or underinsured motorists, medical payments, or personal injury coverages. We're here to help you evaluate your insurance needs and can provide these coverages separately.
Exceptions and restrictions
Certain regulations limit the use of non-trucking liability. For example, NTL insurance isn't available if:
- You require a federal or state filing
- You're actively driving a truck for another company
- You're part of a trailer interchange agreement
Be sure to review the details of your contract to make sure what coverage applies.
Bobtail, deadhead, and non-trucking liability
Although bobtail and deadhead coverages are types of liability insurance, they're not always part of non-trucking liability policies. Consider the following when determining your needs:
- Non-trucking liability insurance protects when you use your truck for personal tasks.
- Bobtail insurance covers you when driving your truck without a trailer behind it.
- Deadhead insurance safeguards you when driving an empty trailer.
Physical damage coverage
While many motor carriers provide primary liability insurance for owner operators, they don't include physical damage coverage.
Physical damage insurance has no radius restrictions and pays for damages to your truck from events like collisions, theft, and natural disasters. Talk to one of our agents to get the protection you need.
