Individual Named Insured Endorsement
An Individual Named Insured Endorsement protects individuals or sole proprietors who have vehicles they use for personal or non-business use listed on their commercial auto insurance policy.
Who needs an Individual Named Insured Endorsement?
If you're an individual or sole proprietor with a vehicle on your commercial auto insurance policy that you use for personal or non-business use, an Individual Named Insured Endorsement is included on your policy at no additional cost. Drive Other Car insurance is available for purchase by partnerships and corporations and provides similar coverage for executives or other designated individuals.
An Individual Named Insured Endorsement covers you if you borrow, test drive or lease a vehicle. It extends your Liability insurance and any Physical Damage insurance you have for your regular vehicle while driving the non-owned car. This means that an Individual Named Insured Endorsement allows your insurance to continue to protect you if you ever need to drive a different vehicle that is not on your commercial auto policy.
An Individual Named Insured Endorsement can also protect your spouse or relatives who live with you if they are driving a vehicle that you don't own.
Limits, deductibles and other details
With the Individual Named Insured Endorsement, limits you select for your Liability insurance and Physical Damage insurance will apply to a non-owned car.
Individual Named Insured Endorsement example
You rented a pickup truck to move furniture to your daughter's new apartment. On your way there, the driver in front of you slams on his brakes. You react quickly, but you can't stop in time and your truck rear-ends the other car.
The car's back end is pretty damaged, and the other driver has a sprained wrist. Plus, the truck you rented now has a dented front bumper.
Because you're driving a car that's not listed on your policy, your commercial auto insurance normally wouldn't cover the accident. Fortunately, you have an Individual Named Insured Endorsement, so your regular Liability insurance and Physical Damage insurance now cover you and the rented truck.
Exceptions and restrictions
An Individual Name Insured Endorsement is only available if you're an individual or sole proprietor and you have a vehicle with a personal or non-business use listed on your policy.
To be covered under the Individual Named Insured Endorsement, the non-owned car cannot be owned by you, your spouse or any resident of your household, and it cannot be a vehicle that is available to you for regular use.
