Many of Illinois’ 1.2 million small businesses need commercial auto insurance for vehicles they use for work. Personal auto policies usually don’t cover vehicles used for business purposes because they’re generally exposed to more liability than personal vehicles.
The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) reported over 319,000 motor vehicle crashes in 2018, with over 21% of them involving non-fatal injuries. Incidents like these often lead to costly lawsuits and financial hardships that are difficult to overcome without adequate insurance.
Over 700,000 small business owners across the nation trust us to protect their commercial vehicles. Each gets a customized policy that matches their specific business, whether they own a single delivery van in Springfield or several catering trucks in Chicago.

Vehicles driven by employees or used for business activities, such as visiting clients or making deliveries, usually need commercial auto insurance. Personal auto insurance typically doesn’t cover vehicles used for work purposes.

Contractors need commercial auto coverage for things like transporting various tools and supplies and traveling between job sites. These are business-related activities that need the additional protection of a commercial policy.

More InfoThere are several factors that affect the cost of your Illinois commercial auto policy, including your:
Some industries have more risk than others. A contractor who carries heavy or expensive tools and equipment to various job sites every day can expect to pay more than a CPA who runs occasional errands.
Your vehicle’s size and use affect your rate. A large food truck with a grill will usually have a higher premium than a small delivery van with minimal equipment.
Your commercial auto insurer will run a motor vehicle report on all drivers who have access to your commercial vehicles. Accidents or violations found on their driving records will usually increase your rate. You can expect your insurance company to look at the past three years of their driving history.
Prices are usually higher in locations that experience a lot of insurance claims, and it’s common to pay more for commercial auto coverage in a large city like Chicago compared to a smaller city like Champaign. Also, locations prone to destructive weather events, such as tornadoes, hurricanes and floods, will have higher premiums.
The distance you routinely travel can influence your commercial auto rate. A vehicle with a local route within Peoria’s city limits is considered lower risk than a vehicle with a regional route that covers all of Central Illinois.
The amount of coverage you need affects your premium. Policyholders with the Illinois state minimum liability limits of 25/50/20 will pay less than a policyholder needing a combined single limit of $1M.
Illinois’ state minimum liability limit 25/50/20 is called a split limit. It separates, or “splits,” the dollar amounts payable by your insurer for bodily injury and property damage into three groups. By choosing Illinois’ state minimum limits, your policy will pay up to:

Illinois state law requires all commercial auto policies to have a minimum liability limit of $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury, and $20,000 for property damage (i.e., 25/50/20). Some policies are required to carry higher limits based on the types of vehicles listed on them.
Other requirements include uninsured motorist (UM) bodily injury and underinsured motorist (UIM) coverages. These protect you if you’re injured in an auto-related incident by someone who doesn’t have insurance or doesn’t have enough insurance to cover you and your passengers’ injuries.
It’s important to select limits that are best for your business in addition to what’s required by Illinois state law. Lacking adequate protection for your level of risk could leave you responsible for financial debts that could threaten your small business’s future.
