Customized protection for your Massachusetts business
Massachusetts business owners should consider several types of business insurance to protect their livelihood from a wide range of work-related incidents. Employee illness, business property damage and cyber attacks are a few of the many situations that can result in lawsuits and expensive recovery costs.
There are over 597,000 small businesses in Massachusetts that account for 99.5% of all businesses in the state, according to the Small Business Administration (SBA). These small businesses collectively employ 1.5 million people and are required by Massachusetts state law to protect them with workers’ compensation insurance.

How much does business insurance cost in Massachusetts?
The cost of a Massachusetts business insurance policy depends on a variety of factors, including a business’s size, location and coverage needs. For example, a business in Boston can expect a different rate than a business in Springfield.
The most influential factor, however, is the type of work that’s done. Professions are typically rated on the risk exposures that are unique to their industry. General contractors, tree trimmers and roofers are a few high-risk professions that need specialized insurance, which is usually more expensive.

Massachusetts business insurance requirements
Massachusetts law requires all businesses with employees to carry workers’ compensation insurance. Employers can get coverage through a licensed agent, broker or insurance carrier.
The workers’ comp law applies to all businesses, regardless of hours worked or number of employees. Domestic employees are the only exception and require coverage if they work a minimum of 16 hours per week.
Other business insurance coverages, like professional liability, general liability or a BOP, aren’t required by Massachusetts law. However, they’re usually needed before entering a contract with a landlord or prospective client.
